China’s former NBA superstar Yao Ming has been named as one of 10 people to be formally inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame this year.

The members of the class of 16 will be honored during this year’s Enshrinement festivities in Springfield, Massachusetts from 8 to 10 September according to an announcement made in Houston yesterday.

Yao will be inducted alongside fellow legends Shaq, Alan Iverson, four-time WNBA champion Sheryl Swoopes and veteran referee Darell Garretson.

Yao is credited with having changed the face of basketball across the globe – earning All-Rookie honors in 2003, being named an NBA All-Star on eight separate occasions and in 2005 breaking the record for most All-Star votes previously held by Michael Jordan.
