Pokémon Go claims first victim

Written by Ben Blaschke

It didn’t take long for Pokémon Go to claim its first life.

The augmented reality game, which has taken the world by storm and helped Nintendo shares double in value over the past few weeks, has sadly played its part in two teenagers being gunned down in Guatemala while out hunting for Pokémon.

18-year-old Jerson Lopez de Leon was killed while his 17-year-old cousin Daniel Moises Picen was wounded.

Local police have suggested the pair may have been inadvertently led to a dangerous neighborhood by the game’s location features, where they were shot at from a van.

Pokémon Go players have previously been warned to watch where they walk while playing due to concerns they might step in front of passing traffic. There have already been reports of a number of car accidents caused by drivers trying to catch Pokémon, including one man in Baltimore this week who crashed into a police car!

On a lighter note, Pokémon Go has also infiltrated the world’s sporting fields with the official mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies – the Phillie Phanatic – chasing a Pikachu onto Citizens Bank Park during the Phillies’ clash with the Miami Marlins.

Sadly, neither the Phillies nor the Phanatic were successful!
