The Parisian to set environmental benchmark

Written by Ben Blaschke

Sands China says its French-themed Parisian will be Macau’s most eco-friendly integrated resort when it opens next Tuesday.

Predicted to save around US$3.9 million per year by operating 25 percent more efficiently than current baseline standards provide, the Parisian features an array of innovative energy-saving measures aimed at limiting its Cotai footprint.

Most notable is lighting, with 100 percent of the property’s interior and exterior lighting being LED – a first for an integrated resort of this scale. The five million kWh of electricity saved each year would be enough to supply power to more than 12,000 Macau households for an entire month.

High-performance window glazing on the exterior of the building will reduce the amount of solar heat escaping, translating to US$600,000 in annual savings. The inclusion of energy recovery wheels adds an additional estimated saving of US $175,000 a year.

Ultra-efficient low-flow water fixtures will reduce the Parisian’s water usage by more than 40 percent compared to traditional fixtures, saving about 12 million gallons of water a year – equivalent to nearly 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

Even the Parisian’s shuttle buses will get in on the act with the entire fleet to run on low-emission compressed natural gas (CNG) technology.

“We set the bar very high for sustainability at The Parisian and we are extremely proud of our accomplishments in planning and successfully implementing our eco-conscious design,” said the Parisian’s Director of Sustainability, Rishi Tirupari.

“It was challenging to make it all happen and there were many lessons learned along the way. However, the technology of sustainability – such as next-generation LED lighting – has progressed so much in recent years that we are able to run our resort operations efficiently without impacting the guest experience.”
