Medley of mooncakes

Written by Wendi Song

The traditional way to celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival is by indulging in mooncakes while gazing at the moon and this year Macau is spoiled for choice when it comes to the flavors and styles available at the city’s hotels. From classic mooncakes like lotus seed and duck egg to exotic new flavors, there are plenty of options to give mooncake lovers an exquisite experience. WGM brings you a selection of some of the best.

JW Marriott Hotel, Galaxy Macau

This indulgent mooncake collection features eight flavors: Preserved ham and assorted nuts, White lotus paste with egg yolk, Red lotus paste with egg yolk, Supreme custard, Red wine cranberry, Purple sweet potato, Pandan paste and finally Fresh Meat with XO Sauce – a special homemade recipe curated by Chef Cao from JW Marriott Beijing Central.

You can also savor the delicate balance of classic and innovative flavors with a pork mooncake at Man Ho Chinese Restaurant, which provides an innovative and healthy combination of the authentic Chinese pork pastry. When sliced open, the mooncake reveals a rich ground pork filling surrounded by crispy, delicate pastry. The meat of the mooncake is carefully cooked with Iberian pork, ginger juice and fresh onion coupled with crispy skin made using plant-based pork oil.

The Ritz-Carlton, Galaxy Macau

Recognized for its fine craftsmanship and culinary excellence, Lai Heen at The Ritz-Carlton presents The Ritz-Carlton Macau Autumn Moon Treasure Box for guests to revisit well-loved flavors, including Mini egg custard mooncake and Mini purple sweet potato mooncake with chestnut – both of which are expertly created to establish a perfect balance of smooth, delectable textured filling in a light and delicate pastry.

MGM Macau

MGM Macau teams up with award-winning dessert queen of Asia, Janice Wong, for the first time to launch two exquisite mooncake gift boxes, making this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival both visually tempting and tasteful. In addition to the conventional mooncake, the assorted mini snow skin mooncake gift box is something new and delicious to surprise and delight. In this assortment, the Gula Melaka pandan mooncake has a light touch of coconut scent and is the chef’s special recommendation, while the Salted egg mooncake perfectly harmonizes the sweetness of the chocolate with the savory taste of the salted egg yolk.

Chef Wong carefully selected the nutty dark chocolate to compliment the flavor of white truffle in order to highlight its unique aroma.

Other flavors include salted caramel, praline pop rocks, jasmine tea, champagne, yuzu and strawberry shortbread – all of which offer the gorgeous sensation of sweet luxury.

Sheraton Grand Macao, Sands Cotai Central

For the first time, Sheraton Grand Macao is introducing a refreshingly sweet blend of Red bean paste and mandarin peel mooncakes for guests to experience a new flavor this Mid-Autumn Festival. However, those who love the taste of the hotel’s traditionally popular Mini egg custard mooncakes or the healthier Low sugar deluxe lotus with double egg yolk mooncakes need not fear as these two mooncake varieties are still on offer, in keeping with tradition.

Sheraton Grand Macao has also designed two very special mooncake gift sets this year. Both of the new mooncakes are paired with an exclusive blend of tea from Tea WG Boutique created especially for Sheraton Grand Macao.

The St Regis Macao, Sands Cotai Central

This Mid-Autumn Festival, The St Regis Macao presents an exclusive Valrhona chocolate mooncake collection of eight intricately handcrafted pieces. Presented in an elegant leather box, these limited edition mooncakes make the perfect gift for friends and loved ones.

Upon opening the leather box gift set, one will discover eight mooncakes individually packaged in uniquely designed boxes inspired by the mural at The St Regis Bar known as “Harmony.”

Within each box of Harmony are four exquisite pieces of Swiss chocolate truffle with vintage rum mooncakes and four decadent pieces of Café au Lait chocolate mooncakes – each made using Valrhona gourmet chocolate. Founded by renowned French Pastry Chef Albéric Guironnet, Valrhona is known the world over for its premium, artisan chocolates originating from Hermitage, a wine-growing region near Lyon, France.
