As keen WGM readers will know, for the past three years the University of Macau has offered a special casino management degree called The Master of Science in International Integrated Resort Management, or MSc (IIRM) – the only one of its kind in the world.

The course, which takes two and a half years to complete, is the brainchild of several University of Macau academics including Assistant Professor Dr Glenn McCartney and was the subject of an article that first appeared in our Jul/Aug 2014 issue of WGM. You can find it on our website at www.wgm8.com.

The students recently celebrated the end of one of the course’s more critical and intriguing subjects, Managing Human Resources and Personnel Psychology in Integrated Resorts, which is a crucially important topic given Macau’s lack of skilled human resources and 1.7 percent unemployment rate.

This subject was taught by Dr Brian To – a senior professor and advisor to Fortune 500 corporations on competitiveness and a Senior Fellow of the Wharton School.

“The IIRM is a definite first for a quickly rising advanced degree that engages not only present management talent but also the leadership needs of the industry globally,” Dr To explained. “This is not your pedestrian advanced degree. This Program is an ‘experience’ that blends and integrates knowledge with innovation and service with a strategic focus. It is delivered by a world class faculty and supported by caring staff. This program prepares those fortunate candidates to engage the future and assume greater leadership responsibility.”

The student’s celebration dinner was held at Tacos restaurant in Old Taipa Village. A great night was had by all and we thank our good friend Marisol, the owner of Tacos, for offering her venue and hosting the class for the night.
