A study by Macau’s Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has revealed that well over half of local restaurants and similar establishments enjoyed year-on-year growth in receipts in January – the highest proportion on record.

An impressive 61 percent reported growth in January, up 27 percentage points since December, while only 28 percent reported a decline. Notably, the Lunar New Year period was particularly good for Chinese restaurants with 90 percent reporting growth.

Retail trade saw 53 percent of interviewed retailers reporting a year-on-year increase in sales in January 2017, up by 11 percentage points from December 2016. Leather Goods Retailers led the way with 100 percent reporting an increase while supermarkets (78%), Cosmetics and Sanitary Retailers (60%) and Adult Clothing Retailers (65%) also performed well.
