Macau police official crashes car while drunk

Written by Ben Blaschke

The Macau police may have produced their most effective advertisement yet against drink driving, but not in the way they had hoped.

On Saturday night, a Public Security Police Force officer lost control of his car opposite the Regency Hotel and crashed into a pedestrian island on Estrada Almirante Marques Esparterio. The 50-year-old, who runs the department of technical support of the Public Security Forces Affairs Bureau, had to be freed from his car before being taken to hospital where he was found to be over the legal limit.

Worryingly for officials, it is the second time a Macau emergency services employee has crashed while under the influence of alcohol this month after an off-duty fireman drove into a taxi on 7 June. He was later issued a suspended three month jail sentence and banned from driving for 15 months.

If ever there was a warning not to drink and drive, these must surely be it!
