Hong Kong carriers ban exploding Samsung smartphones

Written by Ben Blaschke

The ongoing battle between the world’s big smartphone brands is a heated one, but has Samsung taken that concept a fraction too far?

Hong Kong airlines Cathay Pacific and Dragonair have banned passengers from carrying the Galaxy Note 7 on flights following a number of instances of the smartphone exploding due to a fault with the design of the battery.

Multiple reports across the United States in recent weeks has prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a warning, saying, “In light of recent incidents and concerns raised by Samsung about its Galaxy Note 7 devices, the Federal Aviation Administration strongly advises passengers not to turn on or charge these devices on board aircraft and not to stow them in any checked baggage.”

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair are the latest to issue a ban following similar moves from Australian carriers Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar as well as from Singapore Airlines last week.

It is also a big win for Apple who unveiled their new iPhone 7 last Friday.
