Gunther eyes career highlight at Macau Grand Prix

Written by Ben Blaschke

Theodore Racing Team newcomer Max Gunther says he will fulfil a lifelong dream when he races in the Macau Grand Prix for the very first time this weekend.

Fresh from finishing second in the 2016 FIA Formula 3 European Championship, Gunther will partner defending Macau GP winner Felix Rosenqvist and New Zealand’s Nick Cassidy as the team shoots for a record ninth Macau Grand Prix victory.

Speaking with WGM ahead of his debut, the 19-year-old said it will be a career highlight to drive on the famous Guia Circuit for the first time.

“It will be a great experience. I prepared on the simulator to get a feeling for everything and different points but I was at home when I did that so it’s not quite the same,” he said. “The things I know are that it’s a very tight track, very fast and you’re not able to make any mistakes or you’ll hit the wall. It’s everything a race driver wants to have, to drive on a track like this.”

Asked about the challenge of driving alongside two-time winner Rosenqvist, Gunther said, “It’s actually nice to have some experienced teammates at the track with me because they know this track very well and I think we can push each other to the limit.

“To be part of a three car line-up for Theodore Racing Team by Prema is very exciting for me. It’s something very exciting because of the history of the team. Ayrton Senna and many big names raced for this team before so hopefully we can go well this weekend.

“It’s been a great season and I’m feeling good. We celebrated some victories, many pole positions, many podiums. It was really successful overall and now comes the next challenge. Of course, this is one of the biggest races in the world and a big highlight for me.”
