Chinese New Year to spark record mainland travel

Written by Ben Blaschke

A record 6 million people are expected to leave China and head overseas this week as travel for Chinese New Year hits levels never seen before.

China’s growing desire to travel will see them visit an estimated 174 foreign destinations throughout the week-long celebrations, with the country’s biggest airline, China Southern Airlines, having added almost 3,600 extra flights both domestically and abroad for its busiest time of the year.

In total, the Civil Aviation Administration of China predicts around 58.3 million people will fly at some stage during Chinese New Year, up 10 percent on 2016 numbers, while a staggering 414 million will travel by either plane or train.
