Chinese citizens optimistic about the future

Written by Ben Blaschke

China’s citizens are overwhelmingly positive about the future of their country, according to a new poll.

As revealed by BBC News this week, a poll conducted by Washington-based Pew Research Center found that the Chinese generally believe the nation is trending upwards – becoming more powerful and improving living standards along the way.

Almost 90 percent of the 3,154 people interviewed said they believe Chinas economy to be either very good or somewhat good. 76 percent believe the economy will grow stronger over the next 12 months and 70 percent expect their own financial situation to improve in that time.

There was also overwhelming support for President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign.

However, there are also a number of issues that China’s citizens remain concerned about, including income inequality, the safety of food and medicine and air pollution. Half of those polled said fighting air pollution should be a priority even if it means slowing economic growth.
