China arrests 94 in gambling ring bust

Written by Ben Blaschke

Chinese authorities have arrested 94 people allegedly involved in an illegal gambling ring that lured 400 players to Laos and Myanmar to gamble.

According to China’s state news agency Xinhua, police made the arrests in Jincheng city in Shanxi at the weekend as well as rescuing eight Chinese nationals being held by the gambling ring in Myanmar over unpaid debts.

The ring is believed to have overseen around US$72 billion in wagers from the players they attracted over a number of years.

It represents another strong statement from China following the detention of 18 Crown Resorts employees on the mainland last month. As WGM reported over the weekend, Chinese authorities also ordered a major poker tournament in Shanghai to shut down operations last week.
