Battle for Taiwan casinos gets ugly ahead of referendum

Written by Ben Blaschke

The battle to launch Taipei’s casino industry is heating up with Trees Party Chairman Sheng Yi-che alleging his car was vandalized by supporters of legalized gambling in Penghu.

In a report in the Taipei Times overnight, Sheng – who strongly opposes casinos – said his grandmother had found his car covered in graffiti which read, “More opposition [brings] death to the whole family.”

Gambling remains illegal in Taiwan, however a law was passed in 2009 allowing tourist casinos to be built on Taiwan’s outlying islands if residents agreed to such a move in a referendum.

The first such referendum in Penghu County later that year saw 56 percent of locals vote against the move, however support has been gradually growing ever since with a new referendum scheduled for 15 October.
