Badminton World Championships one for the ages

Written by Ben Blaschke

The Badminton World Championships gets underway next week and it’s hard to imagine an event that has been more keenly anticipated than this year’s Men’s Singles as Chen Long, Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei come together in a battle for the ages.

World number one Chen Long has been almost unstoppable over the past 12 months with six SuperSeries victories since winning the 2014 Wold Championships in Denmark. However, the task of defending his crown has suddenly become far more difficult Lin Dan and Lee Chong Wei having both made comebacks.

Chong Wei has spent much of the past year serving a doping ban and awaiting a final decision from a BWF tribunal, but after being served with a backdated eight-month ban has recently returned with a bang by winning both the Canada and US Open.

He tasted his first defeat since returning at the hands of Chen in the Taiwan Open but will only be better for the experience.

Likewise, Chinese legend Lin has upped his participation this year ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games and although he lost the Malaysian Open final to Chen earlier this year boasts a career 7-2 win/loss record against him.

All three players will be looking to peak next week.

Last week’s draw saw Chen alone in the top half of the draw while Lin and Chong Wei could potentially meet in the semi-finals after were both were drawn in the bottom half.
